Opal is a white-colored variation of the Silicate mineral family. It is ruled by the planet Venus. Opal is famous for its play-of-color display, which consists of flashing rainbow hues. Because precious opal is made up of sub-microscopic spheres packed in a grid-like pattern—similar to layers of Ping-Pong balls in a box—it exhibits color play.
